Following two audacious cases of security breaches by vandals at the Bishan MRT depot in May and November this year, SMRT has identified the unique vulnerabilities that exist at the premises.
In a press statement released yesterday, SMRT announced that they have been working with the authorities to urgently address the exposed point of entries unique to Bishan depot. The 30-hectare depot, built on a concrete platform deck over swampy land — a flood plain for the Kallang River — has a network of canals and drains running underneath, posing a possible security risk.
Their 6.5km fencing perimeter had been reinforced with enhanced security features following a breach by vandals in 2011, and the fences had not been broken through in the two latest cases.
SMRT concluded that they will be working together with national security agencies to develop an effective strategy that encompasses deterrence, vigilance and swift response against prevailing threats.
