Dec. 2, 2014 will forever go down in Singapore’s history books, school textbooks and academic journals as the singular most important event to grace the city-state; literal celestial gods Tenacious D descended from their thrones (made from the purest of metals) and graced The Coliseum at Resorts World Sentosa to give us mere mortals only a small lick of their omnipotence in all things rock and roll, for if they displayed their power in its entirety, our flesh would unravel and molecularly disintegrate, leaving only our altered consciousness in its wake.
The master exploders Jables and Rage Kage — personally blessed by the Allfather Ronnie James Dio himself, Odin bless his soul — wasted no time upon their sacrosanct entrance onstage and launched into the second greatest song in the world ‘Tribute’, the now legendary tale that converted thousands of mortals into extreme devotees of The D overnight.
After most had regained consciousness and wiped their bloodied noses from the sudden onslaught of greatness so early in the night, Tenacious D thundered through classics old and new from their three albums, none of which have won Grammies due to the overwhelming number of casualties that ensued from their attempt to analyse their music. To the professors, panel of judges and curious parents who gave their lives nobly in their study of The D’s dark arts, we salute you.
The divine duo took audiences through a roller coaster ride of emotions through a variety of theatrics that very well rendered Shakespeare’s plays ineffectual, including the 5-minute departure of KG from Tenacious D ('Kyle Quit the Band'), an ode to the best roadie in the world’s nephew ('Roadie'), their righteous showdown with the devil himself ('Beelzeboss') and more, along with what must now be considered the best jazz tune of all time ('Simply Jazz').
The arena then became moist with tears and other bodily fluids when the best band in the world ended their advent with ‘Fuck Her Gently’, the world anthem for how a man should always treat a lady. And as suddenly as they materialised, the larger-than-life deities disappeared behind the black veil and left us devotees behind with the knowledge that we were a crevasse, and Tenacious D had filled us up proper with their mighty, mighty juice.
