Math rock — the rhythmically complex bracket of indie rock characterised by odd time signatures, angular melodies and dissonant chords — will be the focal point in the upcoming gig Crossing Seas, featuring three of the genre’s proponents from across Asia.
Experience the aural relish of Taiwan’s Elephant Gym, Malaysia’s NAO and Singapore’s Spaeras in an evening of technical expression, exploring the amalgamation of blues, jazz, funk, a hearty dose of post-rock, progressive rock and even post-punk.
Making Singapore their last stop in their Asia 2014 tour, math rock trio Elephant Gym have been receiving a number of accolades in Taiwan’s latest Golden Indie Music Awards for their album Angle, offering a nonchalantly pleasant-sounding delivery of complex melodies.
Malaysia’s NAO on the other hand are no stranger to the music scene here, offering a more meandering style to math rock, employing elements of psychedelia and ambience to entrance and enthral listeners.
Sphaeras made their sudden big-time debut in Baybeats Music Festival earlier in June and they’ve been on a roll ever since, impressing folks with their compellingly intelligent meld of post-rock textures and challenging math rock configurations.
Coordinate your calendars for Crossing Seas at BluJaz Cafe on Jan. 20. Tickets on sale on Peatix at $26, $30 and $40 — stay updated on the Facebook Event page.
