As tensions ran high in the Singapore vs Malaysia AFF Suzuki Cup showdown last Saturday, the drama ensued both on pitch and off, which saw several security concerns that could have well unravelled the yarn of pandemonium at the National Stadium.
Security personnel had their hands full throughout the match which ended in tears for the Singapore football team and their fans. Several Harimau Malaya fans were able to climb over the perimeter fencing to hug Malaysian captain Safiq Rahim after he managed to convert a controversial late-match penalty that essentially hurtled the Lions out of the competition.
Another incident saw outraged Singapore fans roaring with abuse at Omani referee Ahmed Abu Bakar Said Al Kaf and other officials. Riot police had to escort and shield the referees from the various projectiles being hurled onto them as they left the pitch.
According to TODAY, the Football Association of Singapore remarked that they did not condone fans running out to celebrate with the player, but it was necessary for security staff to steer them back to their seats as passions were running high.
However, Sports Hub is reviewing its security procedures, especially taking note of the issue of water bottles thrown from the stands onto pitch areas.
