Imitation was the worst form of flattery for Member of Parliament Zainal Sapari who recently had someone create a duplicate Facebook profile of him, complete with pictures and other information.
The Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC representative warned on his Facebook page about an imposter attempting to scam the people in his network, sending personal messages to them about some kind of UN funding. If it was any other people, it would have been easily brushed off as a obvious con — but since Zainal Sapari is an actual politician and public servant, folks may easily trust his words.
“Appreciate if you could report it as a scam. I could not do it because he has blocked me. Please do not fall prey to this scam”, he writes in his cautionary post.
The impostor directs susceptible victims to a link where one can apparently get free cash under a ‘United Nation Development program’. Hint: it’s fake.
It is unknown if the case has been resolved. Nonetheless, the Member of Parliament reacted accordingly by changing his profile’s cover photo to a stamp that says ‘100% Original’.
