![Cool Beans: Emoji will soon represent Singapore's diverse racial make-up]()
Singapore, like other parts of the world, will soon get emoji that more realistically represents our racial make-up.
Unicode Consortium — the folks behind your favourite smiley, frowny and smirky faces — have proposed a draft plan for adding diversity to the notoriously 'white' emojis available on a smartphone keyboard, and Apple says it's in on the plan.
According to TechCrunch, emoji were originally based on Japanese carrier images — because they were developed in a region with a smaller geographic, they didn't accurately represent the diversity available in other parts of the world.
If the proposal becomes reality, users will soon be able to pick an ideal tone for all skin-baring emoji (see below), including human characters and body parts (for eg; the praying hands), by administering a button long-press.
The skin tones will follow the Fitzpatrick scale, a recognised standard for dermatology. Exact shades may vary between implementations.
