Coroner concludes boy's death from eating contaminated food as 'misadventure'. Enjoying a nice meal in another day out at the mall turned into a horrible tragedy when a four-year-old boy succumbed to extreme sickness and died after eating contaminated food.  Together with his mother and two-year-old sister, Shayne Sujith Balasubraamaniam became afflicted with food poisoning earlier in January a day after eating food from a nasi padang stall at a Kopitiam food court located at Northpoint Shopping centre. Shayne received treatment and medication from a polyclinic, but his condition worsened when his mother found the boy unconscious at home. He died a few hours later in the hospital from salmonella.  The Straits Times reported that the State Coroner concluded from his findings that Shayne’s death was a case of misadventure — it was simply an accident.  Assistant director at the Health Ministry’s Communicable Diseases Centre Dr. Hishamuddin Baharuddin found that there were serious lapses in the handling of food — swabs from the tongs used to handle food and the blender was found with an exceeding concentration of bacteria, among other unhygienic practices such as leaving cooked food near raw meat. As such, the stall was suspended for three weeks and they were ordered to clean the stall thoroughly, while all workers had to attend mandatory basic food hygiene courses. Dr Hishamuddin opines that it remained highly likely that the family had contracted salmonella from the nasi padang stall.  Photo: Northpoint Shopping Centre Facebook page   Read Also:  Asia grapples with food safety as incomes rise
