The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and Migrant Workers Centre (MWC) have created a 14-minute pre-departure video to educate potential and current migrant workers here about the proper employment practices and workers’ rights in Singapore.
MWC explained that although some organisations have the legal rights to demand compensation for abuses that occur in here, there isn’t much they can do to recoup overpaid agency fees done overseas.
According to Channel NewsAsia, chairman of MWC Yeo Guat Kwang said, “Because many of them told us before they come, they are already locked in with a big sum of money. And at the same time, they really do not know the terms and conditions that they will face when they come to Singapore and work."
MWC said it hopes to broadcast the video – which will come in different languages – in their native countries. Locally, the organisation aims to make the “MWC Pre-Departure Video” available in workers’ dormitories and in buses that transport migrant workers to and fro dormitories and work places.
