On Tuesday Oct. 21, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) revealed the possible reason for the death of 174 sheep imported from Perth for the annual Korban ritual in Singapore, which was announced on Oct 4.
The sheep were part of a consignment of 2,200 imported by the Mini Environment Services (MES) via a Singapore Airlines (SIA) Cargo plane.
Investigations by the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) showed that the sheep died to heat stress and not infectious disease, possibly caused by the lack of airflow transmitted into the cargo compartment.
Investigations from SIA Cargo showed that the aircraft had departed Perth in "fully serviceable condition", but a few hours into the flight, one of the three air-conditioning packs "produced a slightly lower rate of airflow to the cargo compartment on an intermittent basis", probably disrupting the temperature in that section.
MUIS also reported that despite the incident, this year's Korban was carried out smoothly on Oct. 5 at 24 mosques and two Malay/Muslim organisations Jamiyah Singapore and the Muhammadiyah Association.
