A fire broke out in a flat along Telok Blangah Crescent yesterday morning, where firefighters found a burnt body in the unit.
According to a press release by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), they were alerted to the incident in the morning, and had despatched a major turnout of appliances including two fire bikes, two fire Engines, two ambulances and a red rhino along with a support vehicle.
Firefighters forced upon the door to gain access to the smoke-filled unit on the eighth floor and quickly extinguished the fire occurring in the living room area, where they found a burnt body.
Channel NewsAsia reports that the victim was 77-year-old Teo Leng Soon. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
As a precautionary measure, the SCDF and police evacuated residents from the eighth to 10th floors, and two residents staying several units away from Teo’s flat were conveyed to the hospital after experiencing some difficulty in breathing.
Neighbours speaking to Channel NewsAsia remarked that the victim had lived in the flat for about twenty years, and had been a recluse. Another told Shin Min Daily News that Teo used to be a very wealthy businessman and owned two houses and a Mercedes car with a custom license plate.
The authorities are conducting investigations into the cause of the fire.
