WTA Finals set to make Asian debut at Singapore Sports Hub this weekThe newly minted Singapore Sports Hub complex plays host to one of the world’s biggest events in women’s tennis this week — the BNP Paribas WTA Finals 2014.  Held in Asia-Pacific for the first time ever, the Women’s Tennis Association tournament final is set to be a grand annual occasion in Singapore for five years, and the 2014 edition will see the biggest names in women’s tennis battling it out for the prize purse of $77 million. Eight international tennis icons will duke it out at the courts in the singles competition this week, namely Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Petra Kvitova, Simona Halep, Eugenie Bouchard, Agnieszka Radwanska, Ana Ivanovic, and Caroline Wozniacki. The doubles competition on the other hand stars all-time greats such as Peng Shuai, Hsieh Su-wei, Cara Black, Sania Mirza and more vying for the Martina Navratilova trophy.  Already on social media the WTA finalists have been spotted enjoying the sights and sounds of Singapore along Orchard Road and Gardens By The Bay while also training hard for the season-ending finals. Canada’s Bouchard called the infinity pool at Marina Bay Sands “life changing”, while Channel NewAsia reports that sports facilities here have left Russia's Sharapova immensely impressed. According to Yahoo Singapore Serbia’s Ivanovic expressed the same sentiments that even the locals have issue with — Singapore’s excessive humidity.    (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_GB/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); Post by Genie Bouchard. Defending WTA Finals champion Serena Williams will have her work cut out for her due to an injury to her left knee, but time and time again she’s proved doubters wrong — after all, she didn't get to be number one in women's singles tennis for nothing.  The tournament kicks off today at the Singapore Indoor Stadium at 5.30pm; tickets still available on the Singapore Sports Hub portal.
