Ahead of the upcoming FIFA international friendly between Brazil and Japan, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) went down to the Singapore Sports Hub National Stadium to inspect the quality of their pitch. Their verdict: passable.
According to Channel NewsAsia, FAS found the pitch to be “playable” but falls way below expected international playing standards, which “could affect the standard of play”. The match will only proceed if both teams and the match commissioner give the okay.
The recently opened Singapore Sports Hub is the first in Asia to use the state-of-the-art hybrid grass pitch by way of the Desso GrassMaster technology. Reportedly, some rugby players who’ve played on the pitch complained that it was a wee bit sandy, to the point where sand could get into players’ eyes.
To assist with the Sports Hub’s continual efforts to improve their pitch, the FAS will not be scheduling any matches and Lions’ training sessions at the National Stadium, even though it could affect the home ground advantage in the 2014 ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup.
