In response to the open letter by Hwa Chong student Agatha Tan to her principal, the Ministry of Education (MOE) has said to The Straits Times (ST) that the workshop – applied in all local junior colleges – will have run its course by the end of this year.
Over 300 former Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) students have signed a petition urging the school to terminate the sexual education course after Tan’s letter.
Despite that, there were students whom ST spoke to that'd no issues with the programme. A second-year student from Tampines Junior College even thought it was “quite fun and entertaining”.
HCI principal, Dr. Hon, has yet to respond regarding this issue that has put the school under spotlight since Tuesday. However, the institution has clarified that the workshop’s an opt-out course and students were given details about the workshop before deciding.
Focus on the Family (FotF), the organization behind the 180 minutes optional workshop, explained that the programme’s aimed at helping teenagers “unravel the world of the opposite sex, uncover the truths of love and dating, and reveal what it takes to have healthy and meaningful relationships”.
