Agriculture takes to the skies in a sci-fi concept that could soon be a reality in Singapore.
Barcelona-based architectural firm JAPA has designed a network of looping towers that will float on the shoreline to grow and cultivate crops in a pilot project destined here, according to ABC.
The high-tech farm towers are designed to stand 150 metres tall, and will boast sensors that will self-monitor and self-manage the crops according to data collected from cities. In other words, the system will know the type and the amount of food required to grow, avoiding wastage of resources.
Speaking to ABC, head architect and Forward Thinking Architecture labs founder Javier Ponce chose Singapore for its high population density and the serious lack of space for agriculture which results in high dependency on imported food products.
The concept is planned to be the solution to food self-sustainability for small, land-poor nations such as Singapore. Ponce states that the project will be launched once the Singapore government approves their plans.
