The newly-improved Digital Inclusion (DI) Programme will see more than 14,000 low-income household gaining access to computer gadgets, internet connectivity and IT support, said Dr. Yaacon Ibrahim in his speech at the eighth Silver Infocomm Day (SID) on Sept. 28.
The annual SID aims to advocate IT literacy and infocomm skills to seniors through seminars, workshops and exhibitions.
During this year's event, Dr. Yaacob explained the latest initiatives under the DI Program – the $10 million DI Fund, consisting of the Home Access and Social Innovation schemes.
Under the Home Access programme, about 8,000 low-income households will be provided with 100Mbps fibre broadband at a price of maximum $6 a month. A basic computing device will also be given to these households for four years. This program – targeted at households without schooling children – works alongside the NEU PC Plus, which provides enhanced technology help to households with children who're still studying.
Up to 10 digital innovations of Voluntary Welfare Organisations (VWOs) will benefit from the Social Innovation Grant. Innovations with a promising prospective of sector-wide deployment and expansion will be funded with 75 percent of the project cost, capped at $100,000 per project.
These schemes will be activated in the next four years.
