The Singapore passport is now fifth best in the world because of the minimal visa restrictions it imposes on travellers.
According to the Visa Restriction Index by residence and citizenship planning company Henley & Partners (HP), our national passport allows visa-free access to 170 out of the 219 countries, the same figure as New Zealand and Switzerland, which are also in fifth place.
The five countries that top the list are Finland, Germany, Sweden, United Kingdom and United States. Their passports enjoy the right of entry to 174 countries.
HP realises the importance of visa restrictions in managing the activity of foreign citizens across borders. Besides, visa requirements are also seen as an expression of the ties between nations, and "generally reflect the relations and status of a country within the international community of nations," it adds.
