According to a gender diversity survey by eFinancialCareers, Singapore is the most female-friendly place to work in financial services.
The financial recruitment website reports that Singapore leads the way with employee diversity, with 81% of female respondents here declaring that gender discrimination does not exist within their current employer. Hong Kong is close behind, with 77% female respondents stating the same notion. Both countries perform significantly better than the financial sectors found in US and UK, where only 54% and 63% respectively felt the same way.
The website attributes the encouraging results due to the efforts in reinforcing gender-diversity policies in Asian banks. The wide availability and affordability of domestic workers also contribute to the ease of women to pursue a long-term career in finance, even after having children, in addition to the head-start women here have over males, who have to go through mandatory two years of national service.
Various banks in Asia such as Singapore’s DBS and Hong Kong’s UBS have personal-development and flexi-working programmes that allows female staff to have a more satisfactory work-life balance, resulting in lesser turnover of female finance professionals. According to eFinancialcareers, women now make up 58% of DBS’ workforce, and more than a third of them are in leadership positions.
