![Million Mask March Singapore organiser fined for illegal public assembly]()
The organiser of last year’s ‘Million Mask March Singapore’ protest was fined $1,000 for arranging a public assembly without permit, according to various media reports.
The Million Mask March movement calls for world wide protest against oppressive authority every Nov. 5, which commemorates the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605 by English conspirator Guy Fawkes. The movement is affiliated with hacktivist entity Anonymous, who are often distinguished by the wearing of stylised Guy Fawkes masks - popularised by the film V For Vendetta - as a symbol of anonymity.
Last November, 24-year-old Jacob Lau Jian Rong had gathered participants via an event page on Facebook, to march against new online media regulations by the Media Development Authority. Police rounded up fifteen ‘protestors’ involved in the event, who were dressed in red and black attire, with some even donning the mask.
Lau was guilty of planning the march despite police advisory issued in March regarding the illegality of public assemblies without permits.
