In an island-wide operation on Wednesday, traffic police arrested 16 out of the 45 motorists pulled over for the Breath Evidential Analyser (BEA) test.
Among the 16 apprehended, all aged between 29 and 48, 14 were men and two were women. The highest test results for alcohol consumption exceeded more than twice of the prescribed legal limit – 35 microgrammes of alcohol of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath – at 80 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 milliliters of breath.
Legal punishment for drink drivers include voiding their driving licenses from a period of 12 months to permanent disqualification, a fine of $1,000 to $30,000, and a jail term and caning up to six strokes depending on the seriousness of the offence.
