![Singapore film '1965' is not a political Lee Kuan Yew biopic]()
Producers of the upcoming local film 1965 have corrected notions that the film is a political biopic about Singapore’s first Prime Minister and founding father Lee Kuan Yew.
The $2.8 million film will instead be a dramatic thriller exploring the fragility of racial harmony, harking back to the race riots that occurred during that troubled period of time, reports Channel NewsAsia.
Media reports back in July announced that Hong Kong’s very own Tony Leung will be cast to play Lee Kuan Yew, but the producers have not revealed the full cast yet, which will be done progressively. For now, Chinese actor Qi Yuwu and Malaysian actress Deanna Yusoff have been announced as the two leads.
Production of 1965 kicks off in November with Batam as the filming locale. The motion picture will be released in 2015, just in time for SG50, Singapore’s 50th birthday celebration.
