![WTF: Breast milk jewellery is officially a thing in Singapore]()
Moms are generally sentimental, but a recent trend in Singapore takes that characteristic to a whole new dimension: breast milk jewellery.
Yes, you read that right.
In a nutshell, mothers pump out their breast milk — at least one or two tablespoons — and send it to be petrified and hardened to form custom jewellery, which can take about 10 weeks to finish. Apparently there are many mothers out there who think bracelets, necklaces and pendants made from their own breast milk is a beautiful way to preserve the bond between them and their infants.
Some Singapore businesses that have reported healthy response from local customers are MommyMilk Creations and Mom's Own Milk. The creator of the former Allicia Mogavero, has been producing and selling pendants and other handmade goods using breast milk since 2007. It was only when she took her business to online marketplace Etsy that it took off worldwide. Prices range from $100 - 200 depending on the size and shape of the accessories.
Understandably some folks are disgusted by the notion of solidifying breast milk into jewellery over concerns of hygiene and well, just the overall creepiness. In any case, it’s good to know that blood and semen earrings haven’t taken off with the men here. Or at least not yet.
