In a commendable effort to increase Singapore’s usage of clean energy, Minister for National Development Khaw Boon Wan has announced that solar panels will be fitted in 300 more HDB blocks next year.
In a post on his blog Housing Matters, the minister has vowed to make the sun work harder, aiming to expand the volume of solar energy to 350MWp - enough to light up the neighbourhoods the size of Woodlands.
Currently, HDB is the largest installer of solar panels. 176 blocks are already fitted with solar panels that help power common utilities and services such as lights in elevators and corridors, helping Town Councils offset energy costs.
Other governmental agencies such as the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and the Ministry of Education (MOE) have also expressed great interest in fitting solar panels in their facilities.
“And this would mean a cleaner and greener Singapore - for our children and the generations to come”, Khaw enthuses.
