Viewers that caught the airing of Tamil movie Kan Pesum Varthaigal on Vasantham last Friday have taken offence to the derogatory comments made about Singaporean women in a dialogue between two male characters.  According to The New Paper, the 2013 directorial debut piece of Indian director R. Balaji compared Singapore women to the women from India, with the former described as “easy to woo” since they're more into materialistic goods, parties and clubs. Girls from India were said to be different, as they “like to go to the temple”, “like flowers” and “adorning the holy saffron”. In a Facebook post last Saturday, the Mediacorp channel apologised and revealed they were investigating the matter. Its programming director Thilagaraja Manickam said in a statement, “We apologise for the tasteless humour which several viewers, understandably, found offensive. On hindsight, we should have edited the offensive scene for general viewing." Free-to-air TV content is not pre-vet by MDA. Broadcasters are responsible for ensuring that its content meet public standards and adheres to the Free-to-Air TV Programme Code. Photo: Kan Pesum Varthaigal movie poster; Wikipedia
