Under the modified remedial training scheme, National Servicemen (NSmen) who've failed their Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT) can now opt from a wider range of activities to improve their fitness level starting Sep. 1, according to Channel NewsAsia.
The new scheme will allow NSmen to choose one out of five training activities including muscular endurance and weight loss programmes, as well as team sports such as football and touch rugby. The previous scheme focused mainly on stations that the NSmen have failed in.
Full-time NSman Nelson Lam doesn't think the diverse scheme helps improve those who're struggling to pass in their respective IPPT stations. "RT is something like a punishment for soldiers. They've already failed their IPPT, so they should do proper station training instead of games, which in my opinion, don't help much," he said.
Others like Tan Hui Kai, who's currently at his first cycle of reservist, finds the development agreeable: "The new scheme makes the fitness training feel less stringent. It doesn't just motivate NSmen who aren't very fitness-oriented to come for RT, it also strengthens team bonding skills among men, which is very important in the army."
