A team of final-year students from Temasek Polytechnic’s School of Engineering constructed a mobile application that will help in the rehabilitation of patients aiming to regain their balance.   Integrated with phone sensors, The Mobile Body Balance Coaching App can detect if the user is able to stand upright, or whether he or she is swaying.  Recommended exercises catering to the individual are programmed into the app, and results appear in real time in the form of graphs. The use of the app means an increase in convenience for both patient and physiotherapist, as data can be tracked via the Internet through cloud servers.  Currently available with voice prompts in English and Mandarin, the team is working with Tan Tock Seng and Changi General Hospital to make further improvements on the software, such as adding more exercises and voice prompts in Malay and Tamil, Channel News Asia reported. The app won the Institution of Engineers Singapore (IES) Design Award four months ago, and the team was awarded S$1,200 in cash prize. The award is targeted on products catering to the elderly and siabled.  Mohd Faiz Azman, a final-year engineering student at Temasek, sees the crucial role the app can play in the lives of the elderly.   “It's important for the elderly to keep their balance properly because it reduces the risk of falling down. Daily activities and simple tasks like just walking out to the store can lead them to fall because of their imbalance.” Photo: Temasek Polytechnic
