About 250,000 East Coast residents are anticipating the establishment of a new family-centred complex the “size of three football fields” in Bedok, scheduled for completion in 2017. It will house facilities catering to healthcare, community activities, and sports under its roof.
According to Channel News Asia, plans were first announced in 2011 as part of the HDB’s plans for the East Coast. After conducting surveys, it was clear that residents in the area wished to see a centered location where family activities could be carried out. "When we want to go for swimming… we had to take a feeder bus down. And when we want to go to the gym, we had to take a feeder bus down. But now since it's centralised, it's near the interchange… I think it's more convenient,” said Chitra Manikam, a Bedok resident.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held Saturday. The complex will be built on land currently occupied by the Bedok Adventure Park.
Among the facilities to be featured in the integrated centre include a sports centre consisting of five swimming pools, six tennis courts, and fitness studios as well as a new eldercare centre to cater to seniors in the residential area. "Being in one of the oldest towns, I think [the complex] really brings a new facelift to our area, I think that's a good boost to everyone,” said Narziah Abdul Shakor, another Bedok resident.
