Guided tours at Singapore's first native marine park begin AugustIntroductory guided walks at the Sisters' Island Marine Park, the first of its kind in Singapore, will begin in August.  The conservation project was unveiled at the Festival of Biodiversity held Friday, by President Tony Tan.  The park spanning about 40 hectares around the Sisters' Islands and along the western reefs of both St. John's Island and Pulau Tekukor, will serve as a platform for outreach activities to do with education, conservation and research related to our native marine biodiversity. Its location was chosen due to its variety of habitats including coral reefs and seagrass areas. Following the introductory guilded walks which will be held on Aug. 14 and 15 this year are activities including camps, seminars and workshops. School groups may also get involved in monitoring programmes that will contribute to the data used in research.  According to the Minister of State for National Development Mr. Desmond Lee, the Sisters' Islands Marine Park will strengthen the partnership between Singapore's non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the community in conserving the rich local biodiversity, and allow people to make a difference to the environment by ensuring the survival of the country's precious native species. Creatures inhabiting local waters include seahorses, the dragonfish sea cucumber and blacktip reef shark.  As visibility of the marine life is subjected to tidal patterns, visitors are encouraged to register early for the guided walksvia the National Parks Board website.
