15 arrested in latest islandwide sting against illegal bettingPolice say 15 suspects — 12 men and three women — were arrested in the latest islandwide operation against illegal bookmaking activities.  Early on Jul. 10, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Police Intelligence Department (PID) combed various locations in Singapore including Aljunied, Bartley, Bedok, Bukit Batok, Hougang, Punggol and Tampines, resulting in the arrests.  About $860,000 worth of equipment like computers and handphones, was also seized.  Preliminary investigations revealed the suspects may have received soccer bets amounting to about $880,000 in the last three weeks alone. Under the Betting Act, any person who bets with a bookmaker shall be liable upon conviction to a fine not exceeding $5,000, or imprisonment not more than six months, or both. Any person found to be involved in bookmaking shall be liable upon conviction to a fine no less than $20,000 and not more than $200,000, and will also be imprisoned not more than five years.  According to Superintendent of Police Lawrence Eng, this is the fourth in a series of operations the police has conducted to clamp down hard and fast on illegal soccer betting. A total of 56 suspects and $2.8 million have been seized in total so far.
