![New centre in Singapore focused on creative writing mastery]()
Centre 42 was officially launched on Jul. 7 at no. 42 Waterloo Street by the National Arts Council (NAC) in a ceremony attended by Singapore's Minister for Culture, Community & Youth (MCCY) Mr. Lawrence Wong.
It's been described to be "dedicated to the documentation, promotion and creation of creative talents and works for Singapore theatre" and centres mainly on its Boiler Room incubation programme, for which an open call was organised in April.
A total of 28 applications were received, about half of them from aspiring playwrights. So far three have been picked: Bryan Tan, Daniel Tan, Suzanne Choo — their scripts will go through an incubation process of about seven months, comprising research, construction and writing, and another three months of test reads and trial presentations.
Other initiatives at Centre 42 include free use of production space, events that give independent artists space to work or conduct sessions, readings with test audiences, a Singapore theatre archive (scheduled for a 2015 completion) and a critical writing programme, which will teach participants how to document perspectives on plays and so on.
More information on Centre 42's programmes available on the NAC website.
