Singapore Airlines to stop transporting shark finsWith effect from Aug. 1, Singapore Airlines (SIA) will no longer accept the carriage of shark fin.  This was revealed by the airline's vice-president of public affairs Nicholas Ionides, to the South China Morning Post via email. According to Ionides, SIA Cargo has been engaged in a thorough review of the service, taking into account the increasing concerns that've been voiced from around the world on the topic of shark finning.  On one occasion, 350 anti-shark finning activists protested at the airline's check-in counters in Singapore, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Los Angeles. A petition was also started last year calling on SIA to end its involvement in the transport of shark fins — it has since attracted at least 50,000 signatures.  SIA is hardly one of the world's first airlines to ban shark fin shipments. Asiana, Cathay Pacific and Qantas have all enforced the ban in the last two years.  Conservationists' attention are now focused on Thai Airways. Photo: SIA Cargo Boeing B747-400F; Wikipedia
