The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Singapore (MFA) has voiced its concern over a massive land reclamation project near the Johor Second Link.
The ambitious project called Forest City, is said to provide a base for future luxury property, and according to The Star, will involve the conglomeration of man-made islands totalling to about 2,000 hectares in land size.
That's bigger than Pangkor Island.
According to a MFA spokesman, Singapore is concerned about any possible transboundary impact the reclamation works will have on the city-state and expects to work closely with Malaysia on the matter. "We have asked the Malaysian authorities to provide more information so that we can undertake a study as soon as possible... They have agreed to do so and we hope to receive the information soon," the statement reads.
The Star reports that there is concern on the part of Malaysia that Singapore may lodge a protest with the International Tribunal of the Law of the SEA (ITLOS) in Hamburg over the reclamation project.
Malaysia had consulted the ITLOS in 2003 when Singapore started land reclamation work totalling 5,214 hectares at the eastern and western parts of the Straits of Johor.
