Singapore drops nine places in global peace rankingSingapore has been ranked 25th in the 2014 Global Peace Index, falling nine places from its position in last year's edition.  The Global Peace Index is produced by international think tank the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP). It measures peace in 162 countries according to 22 indicators and using three broad themes: safety and security levels in society, the extent of domestic or international conflict, as well as the degree of militarisation. This is the 8th year the index has been produced.  Since 2008, only 51 countries have increased peace levels, while 111 have deteriorated, including Singapore.  Both Malaysia and Philippines have also both dropped at least four places since 2013.  According to the report also produced by IEP, Singapore's decline can be attributed to "an increase in internal security and the police force, as well as higher perceived criminality".  Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines also all "recorded a modest-to-moderate build up of nuclear and heavy-weapons capabilities", which can be explained by the "general trend towards the modernisation of armed forces in the region". Iceland tops the 2014 Global Peace Index, followed by Denmark and Austria.  You can view the full report here.
