First held in 1983 and every year since 1999, the Japanese Film Festival is among Singapore’s longest running celebrations of cinema. Jointly organised by the Singapore Film Society and the Embassy of Japan in Singapore, this year’s festival will take place from June 26 to July 12 at the Gallery Theatre, National Museum of Singapore.
In keeping with the format in recent years, this edition will be highlighted by a retrospective of a great Japanese director’s works. The director taking centre stage this year is Kon Ichikawa. Inspired by Charlie Chaplin and the animated films of Disney, Ichikawa was a director not bound by genre – in the course of his career, he took on dramas, comedies, documentaries and literary adaptations. 15 of Ichikawa’s films will be screened at the festival including Crammed Streetcar, Nihonbashi, Punishment Room and Alone Across the Pacific.
The festival also features a section called “Currents” — described as “films making waves internationally” — which includes coming of age drama Leaving on the 15th Spring, comic adaptation The Mole Song and comedy Maruyama, The Middle Schooler (pictured). Other events include an outdoor screening of Ninja Kids!!! and a mystery closing film.
Tickets for the general public are priced at $13 through TicketBooth with discounts available for bookings of three or more tickets per film session. Visit the Japanese Film Festival website for the full programme.
