At about 6pm on Wednesday, June 11, a legless torso was discovered in an abandoned bloodied suitcase along Syed Alwi Road.
Officers from the Criminal Investigation Department, the Police Intelligence Department, Central Police Division and Tanglin Police Division immediately conducted an intensive, systematic sweep of the crime scene including interviewing people who worked or lived in the area, and eventually established the identity of the suspects, a Pakistani duo aged 25 and 43.
According to the Chinese evening dailies, a worker at Mustafa Shopping Centre had recognised the older man in pictures shown by the police — he'd bought a $119 electric saw from the mall on Wednesday morning. The worker also informed the police that the man, who'd taken all of five minutes to make his purchase, had been captured on surveillance footage.
The suspects, believed to be on social visit passes, were arrested on June 12 at about 3pm in a tourist lodge within the vicinity of Rowell Road, and are expected to appear in court tomorrow (June 14).
At around 8pm the same day, the victim's legs _ dismembered at the thighs — were found in a luggage bag at a Muslim cemetery in Jalan Kubor.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Investigations & Intelligence) concurrent Director of the Criminal Investigation Department Hoong Wee Teck said, “This is a serious crime which Police had devoted extensive resources and efforts to have it solved expeditiously. Police are committed to solve crimes and we will spare no effort to track down criminals and ensure that they are brought to justice and face the full brunt of the law.”
