In a recent blog post published on Housing Matters, National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan mentions that more and more fledglings are staying close to home, "compared to 10 years ago (2003), the proportion of those who live together or close by to their parents (sic) in the same Housing Development Board (HDB) estate has grown from 31 percent to 37 percent in 2013. This is good," said Khaw.
This claim is backed up by the HDB's Sample Household Survey (SHS), which concluded recently. In it, such things like ownership rates, household and family composition, household wealth et cetera, are measured.
Khaw goes on to highlight certain advantages that comes with putting one's family first, "today, HDB gives greater priority to Singaporeans who apply for a Build-To-Order flat in the same HDB estate as their parents."
According to the survey, 13 out of the 50 percent of couples who want to live with or near their parents are unable to do so, Khaw hopes to do more to help these families stay close to one another.
