NUS top university in Asia, NTU climbs to seventhLocal universities National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) have made an indelible mark on Asia as its top higher learning institutions. NUS came out tops in the 2014 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) University Rankings for Asia — the first time ever since the rankings’ inception in 2009 — while NTU climbed three spots to seventh — its highest ever position. Nine indicators are used to compile the annual rankings, namely academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty to student ratio, citations per paper, papers per faculty, proportion of international faculty, proportion of international students, proportion of inbound exchange students and proportion of outbound exchange students. NUS remains as the most highly regarded institution among graduate employers and scores within the top 20 in eight of the nine indicators — an achievement unmatched by any other institution. NTU is fifth in the region as rated by employers, but falls just outside of the top 10 Asian institutions according to academics. It managed to slightly edge out NUS when it comes to proportion of international students. The two universities also hold their own on the international stage. As of the 2013/2014 QS World University Rankings, NUS is placed 24th while NTU is 41st.
