About Do Good Friday: Making time for some give-back in the coming week, but don't know what to do? Break out of your usual TGIF 'eureka' moment every once in awhile to check what's buzzing in the local charity scene on our new series, launched May 2014.
The situation: A blog post by leadership trainer Glenn Lim about meeting an elderly Malay lady outside the Singapore Changi Prison on a rainy day has gone viral. In it, he explains how he emphatises with the lady, who despite her weakened state travelled the distance from Taman Jurong to visit her son in jail to commemorate Mother's Day. The blog post has since amassed over 5,000 Facebook shares. Through the experience, Lim, who himself spent some time behind bars back in the '90s and now participates in a training programme with the Singapore Prison Services, has learnt that more can be done to help inmates and their families.
The activity: On Monday, May 12, Glenn Lim and his organisation Architects of Life (AOL) wants to meet anyone who'd like to brainstorm outreach activities to help marginalised groups in Singapore, be it inmates and their families, single parents or other communities that may be discriminated against. The session will happen from 7 — 9pm (Lim asks that participants get some dinner before coming) at his office in Geylang Serai. To attend or get more information, email ceo@glc.sg.
