The badminton coach who was convicted for having a twisted sexual relationship with his very young teenage student has been sentenced to five years in jail.

The 32-year-old man had first met the boy — then 14 —as a badminton coach in his school back in 2012. Developing a close relationship over the years, the man pressured the vulnerable boy into committing repeated sexual acts under the guise of being a mentor. The coach even brought the boy to a male prostitute at People's Park Complex, where sexual services where carried out on them both.

They were only caught in October 2014, when patrolling police officers found the two in states of undress in a car parked along Venus Drive.

A Singapore-bound Tiger Air flight was forced to make a premature landing at Suvarnabhumi airport yesterday after one of its passengers died mid-air.

The 58-year-old Singaporean man was flying back home from Chiang Mai with his family of five together with his Thai wife, Thai PBS reports.

According to his wife, the man was suffering from chronic illness, and he succumbed to the sickness on the plane. The pilot of Flight PR 2177 then made an emergency landing in Bangkok for medical assistance.

His body was later taken for autopsy at the Police General Hospital — investigations are still ongoing.

A controversy about who's in charge of packing parachutes for the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has been killed off by the military themselves after days of online discourse.

It all started when a Leslie Ang put up a post on his Facebook page claiming that the job of parachute-packing has been outsourced to contractors from China, citing worries about safety.

"Openly, our airborne capabilities like parachute model, jumping height, etc are made known to foreign contractors", he wrote. "We are, literally, placing our lifes in foreign contractors' hands when we leap from the plane?"

“The painter constructs, the photographer discloses” wrote Susan Sontag in On Photography.

In Indonesian artist Boedi Widjaja’s work, these seemingly conflicting mediums converge through his hand-drawn negative images of political photographs taken from the Indonesian mass media. These drawings are then photographed into positive prints, which viewers are able to view through their personal mobile devices.

The constant shift between photography and drawing in his work enables Widjaja to reclaim his past — one that was rendered unstable by ethnic tensions — to imbue it with a sense of personal agency.

It's hard not to imagine that the Straits Times folks rubbed their hands in glee after seeing the physical — and very public — result of a copyright infringement suit against controversial socio-political website The Real Singapore (TRS).

Ai Takagi, one of the founders and editors of TRS, has put out an "unreserved" apology in print to Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) for reproducing or substantially reproducing 244 of their articles on their website without permission. The apology appeared on page B3 of today's print edition of The Straits Times

Though the suit was filed against both TRS founders — Singaporean Yang Kaiheng and his Australian partner Takagi — only the latter's name appeared in the apology.

An enterprising but evil teenager has been arrested after running scams that left more than 25 victims in its wake and an estimated $14,000 garnered through bamboozling means.

The 19-year-old man cheated his victims through the guise of online gaming credit purchases. How it would work is that unsuspecting victims would respond to  job offers set up on Carousell and Facebook by the suspect, who'll receive their handphone numbers.

The suspect would then use their contact numbers to purchase online gaming credits. He told them to acknowledge the messages sent to their phones about the purchase, assuring them that they would be reimbursed, and the credits erased. The victims would then forward the confirmation SMS with a pin code to the scammer — which he would then sell off for profit.

A former teacher abused his position of power and engaged in a sexual relationship with a student 16 years younger than him.

She was just 13 years of age when he took her virginity in 2003.

Nine years since their twisted relationship ended, the 42-year-old man has since been sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison, TODAY reports. He was convicted for two counts of carnal connection with a girl below 16, two counts of insulting the modesty of a woman and two counts of committing and obscene act with a young person.

They first met when he was her English and History teacher — the Ministry of Education have assured that he was sacked as soon as the case was reported.

What was once only possible through Football Manager is now reality — an actual English Premier League star has signed on to be part of the S.League.

Former Arsenal and Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant turned down all other offers and has signed a one-year contract with Tampines Rovers, with an option for extension built into the contract, TODAY reports.

This despite a massive pay cut from his previous wages when he was in Wigan Athletic, pulling in $52,000 a week. With the deal, his monthly salary is believed to be even lower than that, around $45,000. Still, that's a pretty good salary compared to the rest of us normies, and definitely a helluva lot more than what his Rovers' teammates are earning.

Once again, the Australian dollar dipped below S$1.00 this morning, the second time since 2009.

As of writing, a local dollar will get you 1.00192 AUD according to XE Currency Converter. Bloomberg data showed that the Australian dollar was trading at around 99.9 Singapore cents at 10.25am, compared to S$1.0047 yesterday.

The fall affects both the Australian and New Zealand dollars, both of which have slid to multi-month lows today following fierce selloff in commodities and equities, Reuters reports.

Prices of Australia's top export earner — iron ore — are also down 8 perecent so far this year.

Seven bomb blasts rocked central Jakarta this afternoon near the Sarinah shopping mall, along Jalan MH Thamrin in the city's central business district.

Reports are still coming in from our friends at Coconuts Jakarta, but so far at least six people have been confirmed killed, including three policemen. Six alleged attackers are still holed up, while tanks have been deployed on the streets following gunfights.

Though it eerily brings to mind the attacks in Paris, no indications that Islamic State militants are involved.

In a rather generous move by the New York Public Library, they've recently digitised and unleashed 180,000 hi-res images from their collection onto the internet — and they're all amazing.

Aside from fascinating historical maps and other oddities from around the world, there's also a bountiful collection of scans depicting Singapore's past (we're talking early 20th century here), both in photos and in illustrations. Have a gander at some of the great ones we've found below:

Another oddly named IKEA product has been ordered for a recall for safety reasons. One of their toys — the LATTJO drum sticks — is found to be a potential choking risk, and all those who've bought it are urged to bring them back to stores here.

Apparently, six reports from IKEA store co-workers have been made about the toy in which the rubber ball of the drumsticks can be detached or unscrewed. "The design may attract younger children than the recommended age usage 6+ and once unscrewed this may lead to a choking risk," IKEA Singapore wrote in a statement.

No crisis yet as no incidents have been reported, but IKEA aren't taking any risks. "Despite approved tests we are therefore precautionary recalling LATTJO drum sticks and LATTJO tongue drum to avoid any incidents," they said.

With a straight-up brutal terrorist attack hitting close to home, Singapore has stepped up security measures and the such to ensure vigilance against the tragedy that struck central Jakarta yesterday.

Radical militant group Islamic State has claimed responsibility over the attacks near the Sarinah shopping mall yesterday afternoon, with several bombings and a gunfight. Security forces ended the assault after three hours of fighting, leaving seven dead and twenty injured. Five of the dead were the attackers themselves, said to be Indonesian militants. A Canadian and an Indonesian were also killed.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong expressed his shock and dismay over the attacks, urging Singaporeans over there to register with the Embassy in Jakarta. He even wrote a letter of solidarity to President Joko Widodo yesterday:

Just when we're all heaping praises on Netflix, our newest God of Entertainment, they just had to go out and ruin it for some of us who've been loyal customers for years — way before #NetflixandChill became a proper thing here.

In a post by Netflix's VP of content delivery architecture David Fullagar, he announced doom and gloom for all users who utilise VPNs, proxies and unblocking apps to bypass country viewing restrictions.

"In coming weeks, those using proxies and unblockers will only be able to access the service in the country where they currently are," said Fullagar, while assuring that the move won't impact normies who aren't using the tools and respect the rules.
